What are the Standard Sizes of Wood Cabinets?

Having basic knowledge of standard wood cabinet dimensions will insure the design process will go smoothly. Kitchens should have at least 50 square feet of storage in wall and base cabinets. 11 square feet, or four drawers are often required. At least one of the wood cabinets should have a shallow drawer.

Standard wood cabinet sizes are graduated in 3″ widths, starting at 9″. Standard depths are 12″ deep for wall cabinets, 24″ deep for base cabinets, and 18″ or 21″ deep for vanity and desk cabinets.

Wall wood cabinets will be 12 to 13 inches deep and anywhere from 12 to 42 inches in height. Base wood cabinets are usually 24 inches deep and 34 inches high. Once a counter top is placed, the base of the cabinet will be 36 inches tall. Bar height counters are typically 42” high. Widths of wood cabinets can be anywhere between 9 to 48 inches in multiples of 3 inches. Bar height counters are typically 42” high.

What Should I Know About Bathroom Vanity Cabinet Design?

Bathroom vanity cabinet doors can add to the beauty of your bathroom vanity. The appearance of your bathroom vanity rests on the quality of your cabinets. You can completely change the look of your bathroom simply by changing the doors of your bathroom vanity cabinets. Good bathroom vanity cabinet design is also important for utilizing the most storage use possible out of your usable storage space, and this should also be the goal in the design of any bathroom vanity.

What Types of Wood are Used for Bathroom Vanity Cabinets?

Bathroom vanity cabinets can be made from many types of wood including Oak, Maple, Pine, Cherry, Hickory, Poplar, Alder and Birch. Hickory and Oak are the hardest and the heaviest. Cherry, Birch and Maple are considered to be well suited to cabinetry. Less expensive and more plentiful woods such as Alder and Poplar work best with glazed finishes used in creating an ‘antique’ look. Pine is a soft wood that can be more prone to dents and scratches.

There are (3) types of bathroom vanity door shapes: slab, recessed panel, and raised panel.

There are many bathroom vanity cabinet design styles to choose from. Four of the more common cabinet design styles are: traditional, country, shaker and contemporary.

Discount Cabinets: What Type of Kitchen Cabinet Should I Buy?

Buying and installing discount kitchen cabinets can expend a large chunk of your kitchen remodeling budget, and the range of cabinet styles and materials on the market may seem overwhelming. Check out the photographs in home design books and magazines and in kitchen design brochures. Identify which styles you like as well as which would look best in a kitchen like yours.  Remember that while cabinets may be the biggest investment you’ll make in your kitchen remodeling project, there are quality discount cabinets to suit a budget of almost any size.

Discount Cabinets for your Kitchen, Simplified

There are three basic kitchen cabinet price and installation choices when choosing your discount cabinets: stock, semi-custom and custom.

Discount Cabinets: Stock Cabinets Offer Good Value and Style

If controlling costs is your top priority, stock cabinets are the the most budget-conscious option. These mass-produced styles and sizes are offered in popular designs and materials. You can personalize them by painting them yourself in a color of your choice. One advantage of stock cabinets is that they are readily available, so the turnaround time from selection to installation is quick. Choosing a stock kitchen cabinet doesn’t mean settling for cheap construction. They can be the same high quality as custom cabinets, but at discount prices. The trade-off is that they will probably not be an exact fit for your kitchen, and you may have to use ”filler strips” to mask gaps between the cabinets and your wall or ceiling.

Semi-Custom Kitchen with Discount Cabinets Offer Choices of Specific Features

While semi-custom cabinets are also pre-assembled and come in standard sizes, you can select how you want them configured for your own kitchen, and you can change out one feature for another. For example, instead of a standard shelved cabinet, you may decide you want a lazy Susan, or install pull-out shelves for easy access to certain items. You can select the cabinet interiors in any storage configuration, such as vertical stacking. Semi-custom cabinets offer a wider range of style finishes, such as glass-paned doors or specific moldings, without the high cost of custom cabinetry, also at a discount.

Custom Kitchen Cabinets

Custom cabinets are best for those who want and can afford the top-of-the-line. They are made-to-order to fit the exact dimensions of your kitchen with the exact configuration, standard or special features, style and materials. They are the most expensive of all of the options but can be a worthwhile investment if you plan on being in your home for a long time.  You can have a custom unit designed to fit an odd space or to accommodate a particular need, such as special shelving for a cherished set of cookbooks or a display cabinet for decorative plates and glassware. When choosing  custom kitchen cabinets, your design choices are limited only by your preferences, needs and imagination. Because each unit is made-to-order, the time between planning, design and installation may span many months.

What is the Quality of Discount Kitchen Cabinet Materials?

Plastic, wood and metal are the most common discount kitchen cabinet materials. Laminate (plastic) finished kitchen cabinets will have an endless number of colors from which to choose. Laminate is easy to clean and maintain. The largest drawback is that laminate can chip or peel off the surface of the cabinet door, though repairs are cost effective.

With discount wooden kitchen cabinets, all wood is not created equal. It can be inexpensive like pine or expensive like cherry. A major consideration is the physical properties of each type of wood. For example, oak looks very grainy while pine is soft and easy to dent. Cherry has noticeable color variations ranging from yellow to deep red, so look at a sample large enough to show how your own cabinets might turn out. Wood cabinets can also be stained to any shade. Stained wood shows dust and scratches easily, as the lighter wood beneath shows through.

When choosing discount cabinets, there’s no need to sort through your options on your own.  Most kitchen cabinet showrooms have computer software that can help you plan your design and choose the perfect materials, layout and finish for your discount kitchen cabinetry.
